Stand Up Paddle Board — SUP

January 29, 2013 § 3 Comments

The other day we packed a bag of snacks, a couple of beach towels, grabbed the kiddo and headed to the nearby saltwater lake. We were headed to try out something I had never done before, but I had been dying to try: Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or SUP.

It’s been around since the sixties but only recently has it become a real sport. With races and such. In my hometown, this is the first summer where it is really taking off and I just had to get it on the fun:

It doesn’t take a whole lot of skill. Just balance, really. With about ten minutes of instruction, I was out and about paddling away. I did actually stand up the whole time but the husband only got these shots towards the end of my time when I was already dead!

Oh yeah, it is quite the workout. I think if I did thirty minutes of this a day, I wouldn’t need to dig deeper with Insanity everyday. 😉20130129-170851.jpg

You don’t need a whole lot of equipment either. A paddle, a life vest and a board. The board is different than a surf board, it’s heavier and built to float better.

Even the kiddo got in on the action!

Now I want to do this like, everyday. If I lived near water yearlong, I would definitely be adopting this as my new sport.

A million years ago I spent some time in Maui. I used to visit the local coffee shop where the famous surfer Laird Hamilton liked to go get his coffee fix. Here he is, demonstrating just how fun paddle boarding can be. If you have any doubts you should add paddle boarding to your bucket list, watch this:

This article lists the places to do it in the world.

I personally just added paddle boarding in Hawaii to my dream vacations list . 🙂

So, what do you think? Would you try it? It’s easy, I promise!

Neon top + denim cut offs

January 28, 2013 § 10 Comments

I am sitting on my mama’s couch right now, feeling the ocean breeze on my face. I can hear the waves crash, children giggling down in the sand below. The water is specially green today and the sky just an extra perfect shade of blue. If only i could bottle all of this up and send it to you guys, I would. Paradise in a bottle. I could make millions off this stuff!

I hope you don’t find me too obnoxious, posting yet another warm weather outfit. Bear with me, will ya? This vacation has been a long time coming. It’s been medicine to my soul.

{neon top, sister’s closet (similar)/ denim cut offs, old (similar)/ sandals/ blue necklace, vintage/ handmade pearl necklace}

I had been hesitant to jump on the neon bandwagon. Given that is not a very ‘simple’ color to wear. I mean, how many wears can you get out of neon pink shirt? I just couldn’t see it.

BUT if you have sisters, you know that one of their many benefits is their closet raid-ability. For their closet can open up your mind to something you never thought you would wear (thanks sis!). I was looking for a non-clingy top, something easy to go to the pool in. I am now a firm believer that neon not only can be versatile but it can still fit a simple aesthetic. I paired with simple denim cut-offs, my favorite flip-flops and I was set.

Here’s another proof of “simple” neon:

( These are the pair I got last week. My sister gave O the Mickey pair, aren’t they adorable?)

Interestingly enough, neon hues don’t need to be relegated to Summer styles only. Jill recently posted a Winter outfit that will kick your Winter blues to the curb!

Now it’s your turn, will you be adding neon to your closet any time soon or do you already own a piece? How would you style it for colder temperatures?

p.s.: tomorrow I’ll be sharing about a fun new sport I tried!

Little Black Dresses (in mourning)

January 25, 2013 § Leave a comment

I had a post planned for this Monday. Yesterday however,  a huge tragedy hit Brazil and today we are all in mourning. Over 240  people died in nightclub fire, in a city not too far away from my hometown. You can read more about it here. Just like last December, I found myself in tears, thinking of all those moms, waking up in a world without their precious child.

So today we take a little break from the “Summer in Brazil”  posts, for even my outfit inspirations are on a more somber note.

I searched high and low for this image’s credits. If you know, please let me know so I can properly label it.

The one where I share the fabulous time I’m having in Brazil

January 24, 2013 § 4 Comments

I have had many more than five high moments this week. I’m keeping it short because the beach awaits me!

1. My sister treated me to a mani-pedi, so my feet were ready to enjoy the summer!

2. Date night at the fanciest movie theater I’ve ever been to! They had recliners for seats. I almost fell asleep while watching the movie.

3. This store. It took me forever to pick a new pair of Havaianas. I was in flip-flop heaven.

4. Lots and lots of time spent poolside and beach side. I love Summer and I love Summer in my hometown even more.

5. More family bonding time. Love these two.

Chambray Summer Style + J.Crew shorts + Silk scarf + Havaianas

January 22, 2013 § 24 Comments

Hey there everyone!

Don’t mind me, I’m just here, basking in the seaside and sunshine of my beautiful Brazil. Indulge me a little, would ya? ‘Cause we’ll be talking about Brazil A LOT this month.

20130121-144609.jpg { shirt, Lei (similar)/shorts/ sandals/ sunglasses, Mango (similar), silk scarf, Silk Bazaar}

This outfit is the epitome of my summer style. I got these shorts a gazillion years ago. I wear them every summer and they somehow manage to stay just like new. Proof that it is always a good idea to invest in good quality wardrobe staples. Then you can mix and match with trendier pieces like this chambray shirt (although it is quickly becoming a staple to me — might be time to invest in a good one!) and this gorgeous silk scarf I bought in Turkey.

Last year we lived in Bursa, Turkey. A place known for its ancient silk production. I bought this scarf at the silk bazaar (kozahan) where back in the day they used to actually make the silk there, silk worms included! I love adding an unexpected material like silk to an otherwise super simple outfit. The splash of color is a bonus. Another bonus? Tying the scarf around my head kept my über frizzy hair looking a little decent. 🙂

(please disregard the two undone buttons, I don’t know what was going on!)

To top it all off, add in my favorite summer staple ( and every other Brazilian gal for that matter), the Havaianas flip-flops. I’ve worn these flip-flops since I was a little girl and I just won’t do summer without them. They are made of a thick rubber-like material, never age and easily dry off. Not to mention all the cute styles and colors they come in.

I know most of you are in the dead of Winter now. But daydream with me a little and share your favorite Summer wardrobe staple in the comments. Trust me, it will do your mind good to think about Summer. 😉

If you’re new here, check out the about page. It will explain a little about why I’m in Brazil, writing in English, talking about Turkey.

Oh and if you want to make a girl happy, like my page on Facebook. I share some of my favorite finds around the interwebs on there. It’s worth the click, trust me!

Brazilian summer style, glimpses of home

January 19, 2013 § 10 Comments

It’s been seven years since I’ve left this magical place.

Yesterday I woke up to the sound of the ocean, the sun peeking through the blinds. I put on my favorite flip flops and walked down the street to the closet bakery. I walked in knowing exactly what to say, exactly what to order and it all just felt so normal. A homecoming is always so refreshing to the soul.

And summer in my hometown is just the perfect place to come back to.

This path led us to a little waterfall.

O fell right at home at the beach. He has quickly learned the words for beach, swimming pool and popsicle.

Funny fact about me: my younger sister and I are both teachers and we both married photographers. My brother-in-law snapped this one on the little boat we take on the way to one of my favorite seafood places. I just love how it captures the joy I have in being a mommy.

My gorgeous older sister. Love the hat.

My beautiful younger sister, bonding with her nephew. I LOVE her beach style.  So relaxed yet put together.

Fun is being had all around.

A sneak peak of my beach style. Come back on Wednesday for the full look!

Another shot by my brother-in-law. He’s a wedding photographer. If you’re planning a wedding, you should check him out! 😉

A little boy + sand = hours of play.

What is your favorite summer style?

What is your favorite thing to do when you go back home?

high five for Friday — Brazil edition

January 18, 2013 § 2 Comments

1. Thankful for a safe and uneventful trip. Mr. O was a trooper.

2. This view. So blessed.

3. Got to go to one of my favorite restaurants. You have to take a boat to get to it. It’s just paradise.

4. Yes. My feet are in need of a tan. But it feels good to have them in my Havaianas.

5. Watching this little guy bond with my family. Precious.
