Five Favorite things – February

February 28, 2013 § 4 Comments

Here are some of my  Five Favorite February things!

1 on my nightstand – I am on a Liane Moriarty kick. It started off with What Alice Forgot in December, The Chaperone ( in keeping with my 1920s obsession that started with The Paris Wife last year) in January and this month I started Three Wishes. They are just great little fiction reads. Just fun, nothing serious. Great vacation books. I also started a new devotional for parents and I’m loving it so far. It’s called Upside-down prayers for parents.

2 on my tv – I know I’m like fiver years late to the Mad Men party. I innocently decided to start one episode on Netflix and I have since been utterly obsessed. The clothes, the sets! Fantastic show. I am still on season 2, so no spoilers please!

3 in my ears – try as I may to shape my son’s musical tastes by listening to classical music,  Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, etc. He heard Carly Rae’s infectious “Good Time” while we were Brazil and well, that’s what we’ve listened since.

4 in my closet – I have shown you guys my fun new tee here. I also got this fun shirt that has my hometown’s name alongside some famous cities:

Can you tell we’re sisters?

I am really loving my new long skirt I got in Brazil. I wore it to my son’s birthday party and as the busy mama that I was, I forgot to take an outfit picture. Rest assured though, I will be featuring this skirt on the blog soon. Ashley was my  inspiration to style a long skirt with a blazer.

5 on my iPad – I am loving the Camera+ app, it has seriously upped my Instagram game. 🙂

And for the kiddo – the pizza making app. When going on a long trip I always try to load a new app or two. This one was such a big hit. It’s not the usual educational ones I download, but hey, it kept him busy on long flights and waits!

Remember last week‘s post? Here’s the result of what my sister wore. Didn’t she look amazing?

If you have an item of clothing you don’t know how to style, or an event you don’t know what to wear, email me at cardososisters {at} gmail {dot} com and I’ll gladly sketch out an outfit suggestion for you.

What are some of your favorite things this month? Book/tv show/app? I am always looking for new suggestions!

Mango raincoat + brown boots + Old Navy striped dress

February 26, 2013 § 42 Comments

I know I wore this dress only a short few weeks ago on the blog. But I just couldn’t resist showing you just how versatile this dress can be. I don’t think I knew how much wear I could get out of this dress when I bought it. It was an end of season bargain from good Old Navy.
This is how I’m wearing it now. Might even add more layers if needed. A chunky scarf, some tights might do the trick.

20130226-221159.jpg
I got this raincoat a couple of springs ago. I love that it has an extra removable layer, which makes it all the more flexible for year round wear. The big tall boots finish off the look. These boots hold a special place in my heart. I had just moved to Turkey and didn’t speak a lick of Turkish. I saw all the girls wearing boots like this and decided I needed to a pair of my own. With toddler-like mumbles I was able to tell the sales person what I wanted and what size I needed. It’s the little things, you know?

20130226-221059.jpgI like the idea of a necklace just peeking through the collar. I think it adds another layer to the look but still keeps it understated.

20130226-221204.jpg

For warmer days, swap out the boots for heels, layer up some necklaces and you are ready for Spring!

tribal sweater + friends tee + black skirt

February 24, 2013 § 14 Comments

Happy Monday everyone! Yes, I broke down and bought the Friends tee. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it, weeks after I first saw it. And you guys know two of my rules for shopping:

1. If you don’t LOVE it, don’t buy it.

2. And the exact opposite of said rule also holds true: if you love it, buy it (if it’s within your budget, of course!).

_DSC0195

Actually, let me rephrase that. If you love it, can’t stop creating imaginary outfits with it, then, by all means, search the internet high and low for it and buy it. 🙂 I ended up getting one for myself and one for the sis-in-law.

It came in the mail yesterday and I just had to wear it to church today. The tribal sweater had just enough print to break down the all-black. Oh and you can’t see it, but I used this tutorial to do my hair. I’m desperately trying to get out of my hair rut. Maybe a new hairstyle would help?

Tell me, have you ever obsessed over an item you saw at a store and didn’t get it then ( a.k.a. non-buyers’ remorse)? If so, what did you do. If not, tell me if you have any shopping rules!

Silk black shirt + Friday Five

February 21, 2013 § 3 Comments

Hello there everyone! We are doing things a little differently this Friday.

My sweet younger sister needed an outfit for her graduation pictures. Her outfit needed to be in dark colors, not too formal (jeans were ok) but still look put together. Here’s what I came up with:

20130221-201643.jpg

The bones:

– black silk shirt (similar)

– dark denim ( similar)

– gold sandals (similar)

The finishing touches:

-aqua earrings (similar)

-orangey-red lipstick

– side-swept curls

Hopefully I can convince her to send me a picture so I can show you guys the final result. 🙂

Now onto my Friday Five (you didn’t think I forgot, did you?)

1. We spent our last few days in Brazil here:

20130221-201719.jpg

2. I found out that my moccasins are the best traveling shoes ever. I usually travel in ballet flats, but these babies were so soft and just perfect for all the walking we do when we travel!

20130221-201658.jpg

3. Soaking up the last bit of sunshine before heading back into the cold. And soaking up the last but of my sisters closet. I love this beach cover-up. 20130221-201709.jpg

4. O’s first breakfast request back in America? Pancakes. He ate three. I guess all the traveling got to him. 😉20130221-201726.jpg

5. As you can imagine, it was hard to leave my endless summer to get back in the cold weather. But getting back, all of this was waiting for me. Pre-K Home school curriculum ( I can’t wait to start once we get back to Turkey), a Marc by Marc Jacobs necklace ( a gift from my Valentine), sweet new ShoeMint shoes (thanks to Angela) and a stack of magazines (thanks sis-in-law!).

So what are your tips to not fall into a funk after a great vacation? I’m keeping busy and drinking lots of coffee, but any other tips would help!

Beach sarong + green military jacket + moccassins

February 19, 2013 § 16 Comments

I bought this beach sarong from a beach vendor (my hometown is full of guys coming by to sell stuff while you are lounging around at the beach). When I called him over, he was holding this particular one out, but I had not intentions of buying it. I was just looking for a coverup, more of a dress type thing, not a sarong. But the designs on this sarong kept calling my name.
20130219-174759.jpg

{jacket, Gap/ t-shirt, tourist shop in Brazil/ scarf/sarong, beach vendor/ cut offs, old/ shoes, Minnetonka/ bag, Mango/ sunglasses. Mango}

I’ve talked a little about making the clothes you own work double time for you here. As you can see, I’m not wearing this as a sarong but as a scarf. This is what I mean about “double duty” pieces. One day you are at the beach with it, the next day you are out and about for a casual stroll with the fam.

20130219-174842.jpg

uhg I’m not really sure what my face is doing here.

Just like this jacket (another piece stolen from my sister’s closet). She actually got this from the boy’s section at Gap. Can you believe it? I mean, would you have ever even thought to look there for a military inspired shirt? Sadly, she didn’t let me bring the shirt home with me. I can only dream of the outfits I’d create with it. Maybe it’s time I look at the boys’ section with a different purpose( and not just to buy clothes for O!).

20130219-182652.jpg

I loved this outfit so much, because of the sarong but mainly because it was “boy mama” approved. I mean, if I can keep up with my 3-year-old and still feel good in it, then I know it’s a good outfit!

Now, if you guys excuse me for a second, I just wanted to send my sweet family a big thank you. I landed back in America yesterday. My heart is so full of the wonderful times we had together. Memory-making stuff. I feel so blessed (and a tidbit homesick again).

Tell me: Would you wear a beach sarong as a scarf?

A random post with random facts about me

February 17, 2013 § 5 Comments

Today is one of those days you just know is going to be sad, heartbreaking even. Today I pack up my little family on a jet plane and say goodbye to my sweet mama, dad, sisters and my beloved Brazil. Don’t you worry though, I still have some Brazil posts lined up. So you snow people can get some sun and water vicariously. Meanwhile, to keep my mind off of things,  I thought it would be fun to answer a few random questions about myself. I’d love to hear your answers in the comments:

1. If you could be given ANY gift what would it be?

I’d love to have the gift of fast travel. In one snap of my fingers I could be anywhere in the world. No jet lag or tight leg room necessary.

2. What is your favourite TV show of all time ie you’ve seen them all, can watch it over and over again and quote lines from it?

I have two. Friends and Seinfeld. I quote it all the time. Good thing my sister-in-law usually gets my Friends quotes and the husband usually gets the Seinfeld ones.

I saw this shirt at a store here in Brazil and so regret not buying them both. I guess I can order it online:

friends_characters_womens_dark_tshirt

3. Whats your favourite way to wake up and whats the first thing you do?

I love to wake up slowly, with the sunlight (and some coffee). No blackout curtains for me. I always get something to eat first thing because I wake up staaaaarving!

4. Last Physical CD you purchased (not iTunes and download)?

I think it was pre-Napster era. Probably something like Spice Girls. How embarrassing.

5. Your favourite item of clothing and why?

This is incredibly hard to answer. But USUALLY it’s the newest item in my closet. Whenever I buy something new, it goes into heavy rotation.

6. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation, where would it be and who would it be with?

This vacation has been the vacation of a lifetime, I have to say. BUT a girl can dream… I’d go to the Bora Bora with the husband, of course! And I’d stay here:

cq5dam.web.720.405
7. What did you want to be when you were little and do you think you ever will be?

I wanted to be a fashion designer. I flirted with the idea again in college ( but switched to education). Who knows? Maybe one day.

8. What was your favorite toy as a child ?

I loved my Barbie, but my favorite toy was my dress-up chest. I’d play for hours upon end: putting together outfits, playing boutique, fashion shows. Probably a prelude to this little blog of mine.

Hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little better. I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Pick one question or pick all of them, your choice!
