My thirty-first wish list

March 31, 2013 § 13 Comments

Thirty has been a good age for me. I felt like a turned a new leaf on every aspect of my life when I turned thirty. A lot of the insecurity of my twenties was gone, along with some fear. After I turned thirty, I finally looked at my life and said well, if I don’t start today, I’ll never be who I say I want to be. So I started to wake up earlier to read my Bible and workout. I started to take count of my dreams. I started a blog. All in all, thirty has made me a better person/wife/mom/daughter. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for me on my thirty-first year.

On a lighter note, I’m declaring this a birthday week here on the blog. I figured I’d start with a birthday wish list *wink:

birthdaywishlist

 backpack

I am obsessed with backpacks. I’ve has my eye on this leather backpack for quite sometime. But I wouldn’t mind this polka-dotted number. Either one would be perfect for traveling.

towels

We are moving back to Turkey soon and I know I need new kitchen towels there. This OR this one or both would work.

dvd-small

In keeping with my new take-charge-of-my-fitness attitude, I need new workout DVDs. I love Insanity but I need to add variety to my collection when it is not always ok to work out outside in Turkey. I wouldn’t mind this Beach Babe DVD.

slim_purse_organizer

My goal for thirty-one? Keep a clean purse. You guys, there’s a reason why you not see a “what’s in my purse” post anytime soon. I need help. This Purse Organizer  could be be the answer. I love a good practical gift.

Nike-Free-50-Womens-Running-Shoe-580591_001_A

For the same reason I mentioned on number three. It would be nice to take some new Nike shoes back to Turkey. I’ve been dying to try these.

Now most of those gifts are practical things that I actually need. Here’s the real wish list:

Birthday wish list

{My dream flats}

{ a pretty dress just because}

{an extra roomy beautiful leather bag}

So,if you’re over thirty, what did the 30 milestone bring to you? If you are not there yet, what do you hope it will bring?

Friday Favorites

March 29, 2013 § 1 Comment

Happy Friday everyone! Here are some of my favorite moments this week:

photo-4

 1. Three-year-olds are so.much.fun. We went to see one of my husband’s old college roommate. O and their little girl ‘Dorofy’ (I just love how he can’t say his ‘th’ sounds) had seen each other only as babies. They became instant friends and when it was time to document our visit, they started to goof off. LOVE.

2. I bought the Luna bars for me the joe-joe’s for O. I may or may not have snacked on the joe-joe’s too. Hey at least it’s all-natural junk, right?

3. I LOVE Easter. I got this cute iPad wallpaper here.

4. One of my sisters sent me this scarf. It has become my favorite. It will be PERFECT for traveling.

5. I have gleaned so much from this Easter devotional. Easter is one of my favorite times of the year to think on the sacrifice of Christ for me and how that reflects on my daily comings and goings.

Some favorite links this week:

1. I made these Easter treat bags to give to some of the people who pour into my O’s life every week (his Sunday school teacher, the librarian, etc). I used this printable. These peanuts are a tradition in my family, we always make it around Easter time. Here’s the recipe I used:

Brazilian Peanuts:

  • 1 pound (or two cans) of salted peanuts
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder

Place all ingredients in saucepan, on low heat until the sugar starts to crystallize, stirring constantly.
Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes on a low heat oven ( 250 F), open the oven occasionally to stir the peanuts and keep them from clumping.

2. This is how neon should be done.

3. Andrea wrote an incredibly brave post on swimsuit reviews. If you are not in the best shape of your life, you should check out her tips.

4. Kinda loving all these braids.

What are your plans for the long weekend?

It’s a fictional account of the Titanic. I am not quite done yet, but I am loving it so far. I love it that is set in 1912 (reminds me of Downton Abby). I can’t get enough of the 1900’s, 1910’s and the twenties…

2 on my tv

I can’t get enough of Mindy

3 in my ears

I hate to admit it but while everyone else is raving about JT, I have this Bruno Mars song on repeat.

4 in my closet/ vanity

This baby. I should do a review on it. It truly is the most perfect make up bag ever.

5 on my iPad

Banana Republic Leather Jacket + Old Navy Striped Skirt

March 27, 2013 § 14 Comments

I inherited my undying love for bread from my maternal grandfather. He was a baker. I’ve never known a bakery I didn’t want to get in. Undying love for bread is a family thing.  We could never go on Atkins.

I never met my paternal grandfather, but I know I inherited his artistic ability and aesthetic sense . He was a self-taught designer and I so wish I could have met him. The mosaic picture on the wall of this photograph was done by him.

Another thing I inherited from him? His “good coat rule”. My dad says he didn’t have a lot of money, but he would always buy the very best coat his money could afford and he would wear the coat forever.

I bought this jacket off eBay a million years ago and even though it was a bit of a splurge then, I bring it back out of my closet, year after year. And it always makes my very rigorous decluttering cuts. Grandpa was right, a good coat will last you forever.

As you may have read yesterday, I am obsessed over leather this Spring. Especially leather jackets with pretty flowy dresses.  So this baby still has lots of wear time this Spring. (check out my Spring Leather board)

Clearly the weather hasn’t turned very warm in my parts of the world yet… Here‘s a more warm weather friendly way  I wore this skirt.

So what is a trait you know you’ve inherited from your grandparents? I’d love to hear it in the comments!

…………

I spent the first twenty years of my life with 20/20 vision. Until I went to the DMV to get my driver’s license (the minimal driving age in Brazil is 18) and found out I needed vision correction. I never felt like contacts or glasses were really part of my identity, you know? So last year I finally got Lasik surgery and even though I didn’t get my 20/20 vision back, I can see just fine with no glasses.

When Firmoo contacted me about getting glasses to review, I jumped at the opportunity of just getting some fun glasses to play  in, you know? You see, after not wearing glasses for almost a year, I kind of missed the cute element of style they give. Plus, I was looking forward to seeing this:

I die.

photo-4

The glasses are sturdy and a good fit. The website is fairly easy to navigate and you can even use a little tool where you upload a picture and you can try it the glasses. It got here within a reasonable time frame, about a week after I ordered them. If you are in need of glasses, they have a neat program where you get your first pair for free, you only have to pay for shipping.

*Yes, Firmoo sent me a free pair of glasses, but all the opinions about these glasses are my own. Including the cute kid.

J.Crew Factory Flamingo T-shirt, Now & Later

March 24, 2013 § 3 Comments

I am getting my shopping on before we leave for Turkey again and I found the best soft t-shirt at J.Crew Factory. The price was just right and their t-shirt are usually great quality. I have a navy one I bought a few years ago and after many washes it still hasn’t faded.

Like everyone else, I’m ready for warm weather. Yet Virginia weather hasn’t gotten the memo that it is already Spring.

So this is how I want to wear my tee while it is still freezing outside:

now

I use affiliate links

I thought boots would be my best bet. My feet get soooo cold. I have wanted these boots all winter long. Waiting for that good sale. I think they would also look great in warmer weather with a cute dress. Plus they seem like they would be über practical for all the city walking I will be doing soon. Here‘s s a slightly more affordable version.
Of course I’d want to wear this tee with my most favorite jeans ever. I think the best part about these jeans is how they stay true to fit even after washing. I added a wishbone necklace for good measure.
An outfit always gets better when you add a third element. So I thought I’d add a jacket. I keep seeing that leather in going to be a big Spring trend. I already own a favorite leather jacket, but this one from Mango could be a great new addition to the closet. I see it with a cute spring dress too! (check out my “Spring Leather” Pinterest board)
Now, when the weather gets warmer… This is how I will be wearing this tee:
later jcrew tee
A cropped and distressed pair of jeans, a simple necklace, lip stain and my new Toms. I recently got a Toms gift card and couldn’t decide what to get. So like any style blogger would do, I took it to Facebook. The wedges won out in the end. Did I mention I cannot wait for warmer weather?

Friday Favorites

March 18, 2013 § 13 Comments

20130320-220411.jpg

Friday Favorites time!

1. I wrote this on Instagram: ‘he makes my coffee just right and he gave me a gorgeous son. I think [the husband] is a keeper.’ True story.

2. O hamming it for the camera in his Sunday best.

3. & 4. I got some marvelous hours for myself on Tuesday, thanks to my mom-in-law. I drank coffee while reading with no interruptions and I did a little thrifting. I wish I could pack these two pieces and take it with me to Turkey! But I made the wise decision of leaving these at the store.

5. I also got my hair done during my those free ‘marvelous’ hours. My new hairdresser Amy has fairy hands and gave me my dream ombre hair! I’m so stoked about it.

6. Swimming lessons. I don’t know who is more excited.

Now for some of my favorite online links:

1.If you were the victim of the late 90’s, early 2000’s over-plucked brows and have been trying to recover ever since, this article has some great tips for bold brows.

2. Great tip to get your dream buy without spending money you don’t have… Better start saving my change!

3. I love having a son so I can have the excuse to go into toy stores. I love toys and I would love to see my childhood toys again ( but I, in my non-hoarding zeal, gave it all away when I was 14). Maybe that’s why I love this series of photographs so much.

4. O is obsessed with this video. What a cute way to explain the meaning of Easter to him:

LITTLE EASTER from Voa Flor on Vimeo.

What was the highlight of your week? Mine was definitely getting my hair done!
